Count both notes: C is 1, D is 2 and E is 3. That makes the interval a 3rd.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Counting only the gap between two notes instead of counting both notes
- Forgetting that G major has F sharp and F major has B flat
- Reading a bass-clef note as if it were in treble clef
